Gear solutions for sustainable energy, wind and water

The energy transition is driving demand for larger and more reliable wind turbines and hydropower installations. Gear components in these applications must deliver a long service life with minimal maintenance, often in remote or offshore locations where access for inspection or repair is difficult and costly.

P. van der Wegen Gears produces gear components for wind energy and hydropower applications, engineered for the specific load profiles and environmental conditions of each installation.

Wind turbine drive components

Wind turbine drivetrains operate under highly variable loads, with frequent torque reversals and gusting conditions that create fatigue loading very different from conventional industrial drives. We produce main shaft gears, planetary ring gears, and pinions for wind turbine gearboxes in materials and accuracy classes suited to the fatigue demands of the application. Surface finishing and coating options are available for offshore installations where corrosion protection is critical.

Hydropower gear drives

Gates, sluices, and turbine drives in hydropower installations require gear components that combine high torque capacity with sealed, low-maintenance operation. We produce custom gearboxes and gear pairs for hydropower applications, engineered for the specific duty cycle and environmental exposure of the installation.

Long service life as a design requirement

For renewable energy applications, the cost of unplanned maintenance is very high. We work with clients from the earliest design stages to select materials, accuracy classes, and surface treatments that maximise service life and minimise the risk of premature failure.
