The maritime sector

Gears and gearboxes built to withstand the extreme loads and corrosive conditions of marine propulsion and deck machinery applications.

Precision gear solutions for the maritime industry

The maritime sector places some of the most demanding requirements on gear components of any industry. Equipment must perform reliably under continuous load, resist corrosion from saltwater exposure, and survive the vibration and shock loads inherent to marine operation. Downtime at sea or in port carries significant financial consequences, which means reliability is not optional.

P. van der Wegen Gears has supplied precision gears and gearboxes to the maritime sector for decades, covering applications from main propulsion drives to deck machinery, winches, cranes, and anchor handling systems.

Marine propulsion drives

Gears for propulsion applications are subject to high torque, variable load cycles, and constant exposure to a marine environment. We produce helical and spur gears for propulsion gearboxes in high-tensile alloy steels with surface treatments suited to the operating environment. All components are produced and inspected to the accuracy classes required for smooth, low-noise operation.

Deck machinery and winches

Deck equipment including winches, capstans, and mooring systems requires gears and gearboxes that can handle shock loading and intermittent duty while remaining reliable over long service intervals. We produce custom gearbox assemblies for deck machinery to client specifications, complete with full engineering documentation and material certification.

Material selection and corrosion resistance

For maritime applications, material selection is critical. We work with corrosion-resistant alloys where required, and can advise on surface treatments including phosphating and specialist coatings to extend service life in aggressive environments.

Documentation and traceability

Our quality management system is ISO 9001:2015 certified and our QA/QC department performs full NDT inspection and dimensional verification as standard. All results are documented and traceable from raw material to finished component.
